What Happened with Providence?

In May 2026, Providence Health Plan announced it is exiting most of its health insurance lines of business. For Medicare Advantage members specifically:

📅

Coverage Through Dec 31, 2026

Your current Providence Medicare Advantage plan remains fully active through the end of 2026. Nothing changes until January 1, 2027.

🔄

Possible Transition Arrangement

Providence has stated it is working on a potential agreement with a national carrier to allow some members to retain coverage in 2027. However, this has not been confirmed and members should not rely on it.

📬

You Should Have Received Notice

CMS requires insurers to notify members when their plan is being discontinued. If you haven't received formal notice yet, expect it before the Annual Enrollment Period opens October 15.

⚠️

You Must Act During AEP

The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026) is your window to choose a new plan for January 1, 2027. Miss this window and you may face a gap in coverage.

You Have Guaranteed Issue Rights — This Is Big.

When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves the market, affected members receive guaranteed issue rights for Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. This means insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions — even if you've had health issues in the past. This is a rare and valuable right that normally only applies when you first turn 65. Don't let it expire without exploring your options.

Your Three Options for 2027 Coverage

Rodney will walk you through all three — comparing costs, networks, and coverage in your specific zip code.

🔄

Switch to a New Medicare Advantage Plan

Replace your Providence plan with another Medicare Advantage plan available in your area. Plans from carriers like Kaiser, Regence, Aetna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare may be available in your zip code.

  • Often $0 monthly premium
  • Bundles medical + drug coverage
  • Extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing)
  • Network-based — verify your doctors

Best if: you want low/no premium and are comfortable with a network plan.

⚠️

Do Nothing — Not Recommended

If you take no action before December 7, 2026, you will be automatically disenrolled from your Providence plan on December 31, 2026. You won't have Medicare Advantage coverage starting January 1, 2027.

  • You fall back to Original Medicare only
  • No drug coverage (Part D) unless enrolled
  • Significant out-of-pocket exposure
  • May face Part D late enrollment penalty

This is why it's critical to act before December 7.

Common Questions from Providence Members

Will Providence automatically move me to a new plan? +
No. Providence has stated it is exploring a potential agreement with another carrier, but nothing is confirmed. You should not rely on an automatic transfer. The safest approach is to select a new plan during AEP (October 15 – December 7) to ensure you have coverage on January 1, 2027.
What are my guaranteed issue rights and how long do I have? +
When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves the market, affected members receive a Special Election Period and guaranteed issue rights for Medigap plans. This means insurers cannot turn you down or charge higher premiums due to health conditions. These rights are time-limited — typically you have 63 days from when your plan terminates (January 1, 2027) to enroll in a Medigap plan with guaranteed issue. Rodney can confirm the exact window for your situation.
Can I keep my same doctors if I switch plans? +
It depends on the plan. Medicare Supplements (Medigap) allow you to see any doctor who accepts Original Medicare — nationwide. Medicare Advantage plans use networks. Rodney will verify whether your specific physicians are in-network for any plan he recommends before you make a decision.
Will my prescriptions still be covered? +
Drug coverage varies by plan. If you move to Original Medicare + Medigap, you'll need a separate Part D drug plan. If you switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is usually included. Rodney will compare your specific prescriptions against each plan's formulary.
What if I have health issues — can I still get a Supplement? +
Normally, Medicare Supplement plans can deny you coverage or charge higher rates based on health history if you're outside your initial enrollment window. However, because Providence is leaving the market, you have guaranteed issue rights — meaning you CANNOT be denied and CANNOT be charged more due to health conditions. This is one of the most valuable protections in Medicare and it's active for you right now.
Is Rodney's help really free? +
Yes, completely. Rodney is paid by the insurance carrier when you enroll — just like a travel agent is paid by the airline, not the traveler. Your premium is exactly the same whether you use Rodney or enroll directly. You get expert, personalized guidance at no additional cost.
